juryBy Bizodisha Bureau, Bhubaneswar, May 9, 2016 : The Supreme Court today on Monday directed Selvam Education and Charitable Trust [SECT] to deposit Rs 2 crore by June 25 failing which a non-bailable warrant (NBW) will be issued against it.

The SECT runs the Jarring-based Sardar Rajas Medical College in Odisha’s Kalahandi district.

A two-member bench comprising of Justice Dipak Mishra and Shiva Kirti Singh has directed the Chennai-based Trust to deposit the amount. The SECT Educational and Charitable Trust had established the Sardar Rajas Medical College in the public-private partnership (PPP) mode through the Western Odisha Development Council.

Earlier, the Apex Court had directed Selvam Educational and Charitable Trust to deposit Rs two crore within two weeks before the Registry of Supreme Court. The Registry was directed that the amount so deposited shall be kept in a short-term fixed deposit in the UCO Bank, Supreme Court Compound, New Delhi.

The Selvam Trust was also asked to shell out compensation for the 124 students. Besides, the Court had directed the three medical colleges to make sure these 124 students were provided all the requisite facilities and sought reports on compliance in two weeks.

The Medical Council of India (MCI) had granted conditional approval to Sardar Rajas Medical College to admit 100 students for the 2013-14 academic year, but later it barred admission as the college failed to meet the MCI norms.

The students were relocated to other private colleges in the state following the court order.

“The matter was posted for today for a specific reason. On April 19, the division bench had held and directed the Selvam Education Trust to deposit Rs 2 crore within four weeks. They were supposed to deposit but for various reasons known to them they could not deposit it. They filed an application for modification and recall which was strongly rejected by the court and directed the Selvam Trust to deposit the said amount on or before June 25 failing which an NBW will be issued against that. The matter was subsequently adjourned,” counsel Jitendra Mohapatra said.
