By Bizodisha Bureau, Bhubaneswar, September 10, 2017: A persons was killed when a portion of an under construction flyover collapsed at Bomikhal area here on Sunday afternoon. A dozen sustained injuries and have been rushed to the government hospital here for treatment.

The deceased has been identified as Satyabrata Pattanaik from Jharpada area. Pattanaik was returning home after picking his minor daughter from a dance class.

“One person was received dead. Another minor girl who sustained grievous injuries has been referred to AIIMS. We had received 10 injured persons of which the condition of one person is critical. Others have fractures and their condition is stable,” Capital Hospital Director Chita Ranjan Das said.

The critically injured girl identified as Sheetal is the daughter of the deceased Satya Patnaik.

Fire department personnel reached the spot for rescue operations. Sniffer dogs have been pressed into service to locate trapped persons.

The officials of R&B Division reached the accident site to ascertain the cause of mishap. A high level inquiry has been ordered by Chief Engineer, Designs and Chief Engineer, Roads.

“Action would be initiated against people responsible for the mishap,” Works Secretary Nalini Kanta Pradhan said.

On the other hand, locals have alleged poor quality construction which led to the collapse of the concrete structure. The centering support caved in leading to the disaster, onlooker said

Expressing grief over the loss of a life after a major portion of an under-construction flyover bridge collapsed near Bomikhal here on Sunday, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh from Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for kin of the deceased. Patnaik also announced the treatment cost of the injured will be borne entirely by the State Government.

Later in the day, Patnaik visited the victims undergoing treatment at Capital Hospital and inquired about their health. “I am shocked to learn about the death of one person in the unfortunate incident. My deepest condolence to the bereaved family. I have discussed with the doctors about the health of victims. Two engineers have been suspended. A high level inquiry has been ordered,” Patnaik told media.

The suspended officials are Deputy Executive Engineer Bansidhar Prahraj and Assistant Engineer Kishore Rout of the Works department.

DGP RP Sharma, Police Commissioner YB Khurania and other administrative officials visited the spot to take stock of the situation.

DGP Sharma said, “Commissionerate Police registered a case and action will be taken against the guilty.”
