juryBy Bizodisha Bureau, Bhubaneswar, November 11, 2016 : The Supreme Court of India has upheld the Odisha Entry Tax Act 1999 while disposing a special leave petition (SLP) filed by Vedanta Aluminium Ltd in the apex court in 2012.

Consequently, the Odisha government is expected to beef up its revenue by about Rs 1,500 crore as entry tax and interest arrears, finance minister, Pradip Amat told reporters on Friday.

The State Finance department said in a media release that in pursuance to interim orders of the apex court and the Orissa High Court some dealers have paid 50% entry tax while some others have paid one third of the Entry Tax.

A nine-judge bench of Supreme Court ordered the State is competent to levy entry tax while hearing the Special Leave Petition filed by Vedanta.

The division bench made it clear that under the Article 304 of the Constitution of India, the State can levy the Entry tax on scheduled goods brought/procured from outside the State which are not manufactured.
