By Bizodisha Bureau, Bhubaneswar, November 22, 2015 : India on Sunday successfully carried out the user trial of indigenous Advanced Air Defence (AAD) interceptor missile from the launching complex of Abdul Kalam Island (formerly Wheeler Island) off Odisha coast.

The user trial was conducted by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the Indian Army.

The 11th developmental test by the Defence Research and Developmental Organisation (DRDO) was conducted at 9:46 am and an electronic target was fired from launch pad-3 of Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur.

The interceptor, positioned at launch pad-4 of Integrated Test Range at Abdul Kalam Island, roared into the sky to hit its target above 15-20 km altitude.

The target, mimicking an incoming enemy missile, was test fired and after getting signals from the radars, the interceptor went into action.

Radars were stationed at Konark and Paradip coast to monitor the behaviour of the interceptor missle, sources said.

Of the 10 tests held earlier, eight were successful.

In April this year, the AAD missile had failed to hit the target missile during a similar test from the defence base. The missile nosedived into the Bay of Bengal a few moments after its take off from a mobile launcher.

In July 26, 2010 also the test was unsuccessful.

The missiles have been test fired in endo-atmospheric region (below the altitude of 40 km) on seven occasions and three in exo-atmosphere (above an altitude of 80 km) region.
