By Bizodisha Bureau, Bhubaneswar, April 5, 2026: The Centre on Saturday approved a major road infrastructure project in Odisha, to strengthen connectivity and improve road safety across several districts.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari announced that an amount of Rs 447.11 crore has been sanctioned for the upgradation of the Kurumpuri–Raj Khariar section. The project will cover a stretch of 103.52 kilometres across National Highways 353 and 59, passing through Nuapada and Bolangir districts.

These highways form a crucial interstate corridor linking the Raipur–Mahasamund region of neighbouring Chhattisgarh with Odisha, and further extending towards Berhampur and Gopalpur Port. The upgrade is expected to significantly enhance both regional and interstate connectivity.

Once completed, the improved corridor will facilitate smoother movement of passenger and freight traffic across multiple districts, including Nuapada, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Ganjam. Officials believe this will reduce travel time and improve logistical efficiency in the region.

A key focus of the project is road safety. Plans include the rectification of accident-prone black spots and the addition of paved shoulders, which will particularly benefit two-wheeler riders, who make up a large portion of road users in the area.

The upgraded corridor is also expected to improve access to prominent tourist destinations such as Daringbadi and the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary, along with nearby hill regions. This, in turn, is likely to boost tourism and contribute to local economic growth.

Overall, the project marks a significant step towards improving infrastructure and connectivity in Odisha, while supporting regional development.
