By Bizodisha Bureau, Bhubaneswar, May 1, 2025: Odisha on Thursday announced expansion of the upcoming Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project, extending the corridor to include Cuttack’s SCB Medical College and Hospital .
Earlier, the Metro Rail project was planned to run from Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to Trisulia, the metro line will now extend beyond Trisulia to Cuttack’s Netaji Bus Terminal, with further extension to (SCB MCH).
Speaking to reporters, Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra announced a new DPR is underway, enhancing connectivity. He underscored the need for this vital extension.
“Earlier plans for the metro to Triuslia would not have been beneficial for commuters, as a link to Cuttack City is required. Now, the metro line will be stretched to address passenger needs and reach the Cuttack Bus Stand and the SCB MCH,” the minister said.
He also added that a high-level committee comprising the principal secretary, administrative officials, and technical experts has been formed to conduct feasibility studies and recommend the most efficient route.
Based on their findings, a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) is being prepared to incorporate the extended route, ensuring the metro connects Bhubaneswar and Cuttack more effectively.
While the initial estimated cost for the 26 km metro corridor with 20 stations was Rs 6,255 crore, to be borne entirely by the state government, recent developments indicate a shift towards collaborative funding.
The Minister confirmed that the centre will now contribute towards funding of the metro. “The Centre would definitely extend all necessary assistance for smooth and speedy implementation of the ambitious project, and the CM Mohan Majhi-led government would assure its timely and proper completion,” he stated.
The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project was commenced on November 20, 2023, with an initial target completion date set for 2027 for Phase I. However, with the current expansion and the preparation of a new DPR being underway, a revised timeline will be announced by the state government after the DPR is prepared.
