By Bizodisha Bureau, Bhubaneswar, December 6, 2016 : The demise of 68 year old Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa at Chennai on Monday night after battling for life for 74 long days has triggered immense grief across the country.
Mourning the death of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, members of Odisha Assembly on Tuesday today observed one-minute silence for the departed soul.
As the House assembled for the day, Chief Minister and Leader of the House Naveen Patnaik moved a condolence motion which was supported by Opposition members.
Speaker Niranjan Pujari adjourned the House till tomorrow as a mark of respect for the departed leader.
Patnaik will leave for Chennai today to attend the funeral of late Jayalalithaa.
In his condolence message, Patnaik said, “I am deeply shocked at the passing away of the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Selvi J Jayalalithaa. She was the leader of the masses, and had made immense contribution to the development and welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. She enjoyed a huge mandate, and was known for her administrative calibre and political sagacity. She was the iron lady of Tamil Nadu who successfully steered the state on the path of progress and prosperity.”
The CM further said, “Her benevolent measures endeared her to one and all. The people of Tamil Nadu affectionately referred her as Amma,” the CM said adding, “Her death is a great National loss. The people of Odisha stand in solidarity with the people of Tamil Nadu in this hour of grief and bereavement. I pray that her soul may rest in peace,” Patnaik added.
Besides Patnaik, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also arrive at Chennai on Tuesday to pay his last respect to the departed soul.
