NaveenBy Bizodisha Bureau, Bhubaneswar, February 28: Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday said the sustained battle by his party BJD against the “historic negligence” by successive governments at the Centre had always received supports from the people and helped the party to win elections to rule the state.

Addressing the party leaders and workers after being crowned as the party president for the consecutive seventh term, the chief minister said the progressive steps taken by his government for inclusive growth had endeared the BJD among masses.

“Our struggle against historic negligence by the Centre had helped us win the trust and confidence of people of the state. Besides, our efforts for the inclusive growth of tribals, minorities and all other sections of the society have paid off,” he said.

He thanked the party workers for working day and night to help the government ensure that all the people-oriented development programmes and welfare measures reached to the targeted beneficiaries.

Stating that BJD’s importance in national politics had increased, Mr Patnaik said that the BJD despite being a regional party was now being considered a reckoning force in Indian politics.

This is the seventh consecutive term for Naveen in the post.

Party’s returning officer and BJD leader Pratap Keshari Deb made the formal announcement at the party headquarters here.

“Naveen Patnaik has been elected unopposed as the president of BJD,” Pratap Keshari Deb said.This apart, names of eighty state executive members were also announced. The party’s organizational elections, a triennial affair, saw 33 new faces as members of the council.

“I thank all the BJD workers for their support,” Naveen expressed after the announcement. The organisational polls of BJD were held in five phases. The process reached the final stage with the filing of nominations for the post of president. Parliamentary Affairs Minister and senior BJD leader Bikram Keshari Arukh had filed the nomination papers on behalf of Naveen Patnaik on Friday.

The party had appointed district returning officers (DROs) for 32 organisational districts in December last year to start the process for party polls.

Mr Patnaik is the founder president of the BJD, which came into being after the death of Biju Patnaik in 1997.
