Odisha has achieved a record growth of around 13% in fish production during 2014-15 with total production of 467076 metric tone [MT] against the total production of 413889 MT last year.
Reviewing the progress of fish production at a high level meeting here on Monday, chief secretary, G C Pati underscored the need for developing fishery clusters in the state and enhance growth rate of total fish production to 20% in coming year.
Chief Secretary said that 20% growth can be achieved through adoption of appropriate technology, technical assistance to fish farmers in tranches already under fish cultivation; and brining more areas under fish cultivation.
Secretary fisheries and animal resource development Bishnupada Sethi said that during 2014-15 additional area of 4000 hectors was brought under fish cultivation. The export in sea food has also been boosted up to Rs 2300 crore during 2014-15.
Total fish production in the state has gone up from 370643 MT in 2009-10 to 467076 MT in 2014-15. During this time inland fish production has increased from 241311 MT to 333865 MT. Similarly, the marine fish production has also been increased from 129332 MT to 133211 MT. Sea food export also shot up from Rs 421 cr in 2009-10 to Rs.2300 cr in 2014-15.
Pati advised the department to instruct all district fishery officers to follow up new fishery projects and fishing pond proposals and ensure their successful operation.
Pati also asked the department to promote 16 fishing clusters in Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsingpur, Kendrapara and Bhadrak districts. Chief Secretary Pati directed that clusters be developed in those areas where power and connectivity can be ensured.
