Hundreds of students of the Bhubaneswar engineering college Gandhi Institute for Technology (GIFT) on Friday ransacked the Capital Hospital run by the state government following death of a fellow student. The student was admitted to the hospital after he met with an accident this evening.
The students vandalized the causality ward of the Capital hospital alleging medical negligence which caused the student Ankur Mohanty’s death.
Ankur, a B Tech third year student of the college, hails from Bhimpur area under Airfield police limits, was
“We brought him to the hospital in a PCR van at around 5.30pm today. He was attended to in the causality ward. He was in good condition and was able to recognise all his friends. But after an hour, the doctor informed that the patient was no more,” said a batch mate of the deceased.
The Capital Hospital sources, however, refuted the allegations saying that Ankur was declared dead on arrival.
The students further alleged that the doctors didn’t allow them to see the body and took it for autopsy, which triggered tension and led to ransacking of the casualty ward of the hospital.
Soon after the incident, assistant commissioner of police, Aseem Panda and other police officials rushed to the spot along with two platoons of police forces to calm down the irate students.
